Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a safe and mild sedative used in pediatric dentistry to help children feel relaxed and comfortable during dental procedures. Administered through a mask placed over the nose, nitrous oxide induces a calm and euphoric sensation, allowing children to remain conscious and cooperative while receiving treatment.
PLEASE NOTE: Pregnant women must remain in the waiting room if nitrous is being used in the operatory with the child.
Please do not give your child anything to eat or drink 2 hours before the procedure. This will cause a rescheduled appointment.
How to explain
“Nitrous Oxide”
to a 5-year-old
Nitrous oxide is like wearing a special superhero mask that helps you feel happy and relaxed at the dentist. It’s a gentle gas that you breathe in through your nose, and it makes everything feel silly and fun, just like you’re floating on a cloud!
