What Is Considered a Dental Emergency?

A pediatric dental emergency is any sudden problem involving the teeth, gums, or mouth that causes pain, bleeding, or risk of infection. Common examples include:

  • Toothaches or pain when chewing

  • Knocked-out (avulsed) teeth

  • Broken, chipped, or fractured teeth

  • Cuts or bleeding in the gums, lips, or cheeks

  • Swelling or infection in the gums or jaw

  • Lost fillings or crowns

  • Objects stuck between teeth

If you’re unsure whether your child’s situation is an emergency, call our Towson office. Our team will guide you through the next steps and schedule an appointment as soon as possible.

Tips for Parents: What To Do Before You Arrive

  • Toothache: Rinse the mouth with warm water and gently floss around the sore tooth.

  • Knocked-out permanent tooth: Keep the tooth moist in milk or saliva and call us immediately.

  • Broken tooth: Rinse with water and save any fragments in a clean container.

  • Bleeding gums or lip: Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth.

  • Swelling: Use a cold compress on the outside of the cheek.

Avoid using aspirin or numbing gels directly on the gums, as these can irritate tissue.
